Abstract

With an emphasis on the ideas of wealth and poverty, this research investigates the paremiological worldview of the English language. The study reveals the cultural views ingrained in English proverbs and sayings by identifying the positive and negative connotations linked with prosperity and poverty using a corpus of 107 paremias. The results show that whereas poverty is often connected to fortitude and humility, riches is mostly associated with negative connotations, such as greed and moral decay. By offering insights into the worldview of English speakers, this research advances our knowledge of the relationship between language and cultural values.
